Description of The City Mission
The City Mission is a dynamic ministry that exists to empower men, women, and children in Cleveland at their point of crisis with practical help, restored hearts, and sustainable homes.
Use of Name: Many cities in the U.S. and around the world have rescue missions. To distinguish our organization, our official name is “The City Mission” although there are many references to “Cleveland City Mission.” On second mention, the name can be abbreviated to “the Mission”.
Our Brand Book
In 2018, The City Mission decided that we were ready for a new logo – one that better represents our city, our message, and our people. We hope this brand book helps you better understand and represent The City Mission in your own publications about and on behalf of the Mission. Inside you’ll find information about our logo, typography, photography and writing styles, proper spelling and capitalization of our ministries, and more. History of The City Mission
In 1910, The City Mission opened to serve the poor in Cleveland in an abandoned saloon following a mass meeting organized by city, business and church leaders.
As the population of Cleveland and its needs changed, so did the Mission. In the 1970’s, the population of homeless women and children gradually increased. The Mission responded by opening Angeline Christian Home in 1981 with 14 beds. In the early 1990s, the Mission’s ministries to homeless men, youth, and the poor moved to its current location at E. 55th and Carnegie Avenue. Laura’s Home on Puritas Avenue opened in 2003 with 136 beds in 51 suites, eventually replacing Angeline Christian Home.
Today, the Mission is a multi-faceted ministry in Northeast Ohio with programs for men, women and children who are living in crisis.
In addition to providing physical assistance, we also offer our residents the opportunity to move from lives of poverty to stability, growth, and productivity. As a Christian ministry, we meet spiritual needs by introducing them to the life-changing gospel of Jesus Christ. We begin at each individual’s point of immediate need and move him or her along, with appropriate resources, from crisis through recovery and discipleship to integration back into family and society.
